The 120 Days of Sodom
Marquis de Sade, translated by Will McMorran and Thomas Wynn
Written in the Bastille in 1785 on a single roll of paper Sade hid in his cell wall. It's here because the word 'sadism' comes from this man and it's worth knowing what the word was built on โ not because it's a guide to anything. This translation won the 2017 Scott Moncrieff Prize and was the first to bring the text into Penguin Classics.
